A short history of the blot

1850s: Justinus Kerner, a German doctor and poet, dripped ink on paper, folded it, and wrote poems about the ghosts and creatures he found. He called them Klecksographien — blot pictures.
1890s: Inkblots became a parlor game. Players of Blotto, and readers of the 1896 book Gobolinks, made blots and competed to name or rhyme them.
1921: Swiss psychiatrist Hermann Rorschach — nicknamed “Klecks” as a schoolboy — published ten cards: mostly black ink, two touched with red, the last three in full color, every one mirrored across a single fold.
